Hays Takes Double Header at Patriot

Kearney, Neb. – Fort Hays State got strong outings from starting pitchers Savannah Egger and Morgan Schmidt and used several big innings at the plate to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 4-1 and 9-2, Friday afternoon at Patriot Park.

This is the only meeting between Hays (16-12, 2-4) and UNK (13-15, 1-5) this spring with the games being moved up a day due to expected inclement weather.

In game one, Egger threw a complete game five-hitter, blanking the Lopers until the sixth inning. Sophomore Madeline Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) countered with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, but Hays took advantage of five walks over the first two innings to build a 3-0 lead. They finished with just four hits but one was a two-run single by second baseman Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson.

Egger (9-5) fanned four and worked around three walks with five different Lopers having a single including a run scoring one by junior center fielder Eden McNally (Castle Rock, Colo.). Finally, the teams combined to leave 16 on base which included UNK leaving the bases full in the sixth.

It was another pitcher's duel in the nightcap as Schmidt (4-6) allowed just one earned run over the first 5.1 innings with Janssen blanking the Tigers in five of the first six innings. Hays took advantage of two errors and got a two-run single by third baseman Loren Beggs to grab a 3-0 lead after three.

The Tiger outfield twice threw out Lopers at home plate with the Blue & Gold leaving the bases full in its half of the third. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth with runners at second and third, UNK hit into a ground out to end the threat and inning. Hays then erupted for sixth in the seven thanks to five hits (back-to-back triples), two errors and a walk.

Sophomore shortstop Mary Chvatal (Wahoo) went 3 for 3 from the leadoff spot with the FHSU leadoff hitter Peyton Shepard going 3 for 5 with two runs.

UNK heads to nationally-ranked Pitt State and Missouri Southern next weekend.
