#11 Gorillas Take Friday Doubleheader

Kearney, Neb. – The 11th-ranked Pittsburg State Gorillas used five big innings to sweep a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 12-4 (5 innings) and 10-2 (6 innings), Friday afternoon in Kansas.

Pitt is now 34-4 (8-2) while UNK falls to 13-18 (1-7). The Loper road doesn't get any easier as it faces 28th-ranked Missouri Southern (27-10, 7-3) on Saturday.

Freshman right fielder/designated player Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) staked UNK to a 4-0 lead in game one when her first collegiate homer was a "Grand Slam" to center with one down in the first. The dinger came off Grand Island Northwest freshman Ava Laurent.

However, Pitt scored four in their first at-bat and then added two more in the second and erupted for five in the fourth. The top four batters in the order combined to go 8 for 10 with eight RBI's, 10 runs and two home runs. Laurent (11-1) settled down after the first, throwing a complete game two-hitter with seven K's and three walks.

For UNK, sophomore shortstop and leadoff hitter Mary Chvatal (Wahoo) went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

In the nightcap, it was a pitcher's duel between sophomore Madeline Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) and Gorilla redshirt senior Kiana Pogroszewski (10-1) over the first 4.1 innings. However, Pitt erupted for four in the fifth and four more in the sixth to bust open a 2-1 game.

Senior catcher Paxtyn Hayes (3 for 4, one run & three RBI's) and junior designated player Amaya Snyder (2 for 2, one run & two RBI's) paced the offense with Pogroszewski working around eight hits and a walk to throw her sixth complete game.

Janssen allowed four earned in 4.2 innings, Chvatal (2 for 3) had a multi-hit effort and junior second baseman Rylyn Nelson (Sterling, Colo.) had a double and scored.
