Lopers Split with the Bearcats; Griffs Up Sunday

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Daniella Morillas tossed a complete game 10-hitter and shut out Northwest Missouri State in six innings to help Nebraska-Kearney win game two of a double header, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Maryville.

This is MIAA "Opening Weekend" with the games pushed back a day due to weather. In game one, Bearcat senior lefty Breck Dickey threw a complete game one-hitter, and tossed 142 pitches, to help her team win, 4-1.

Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) is now 5-2 as she had five strikeouts and walked three over 125 pitches. UNK scored single runs in the first and second innings on the strength of an RBI ground by freshman third baseman Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) and a two-out, full count RBI single by senior right fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (Omaha Gross).

However, Northwest recorded back-to-back singles to start the fifth and then an infield error loaded the bases. While Morillas got the next two batters out, senior Sophie Mayhugh delivered a two-run single to center. The 'Cats also had the bases loaded in the sixth but a pop up to right ended the threat and inning. They would strand 12 runners in the loss.

UNK won the game in the seventh after Gaube reached via error and then scored on another NW fielding miscue. Morillas coaxed Mayhugh to line into a 4-6-3 double play to kill a potential rally.

Dickey (3-3) allowed just an RBI single from senior first baseman Leah Jurgens (Crete H.S.) in the first game while fanning 14. She worked around six walks and shut out UNK over the final six innings. Offensively, Northwest had 11 hits but left 10 on the base paths. They tied things up in the third and then scored three times in the fifth thanks to five hits, two being back-to-back triples.

Sophomore Madeline Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) and Morillas combined for three Ki's and four earned runs while walking just three.

The Lopers head to Missouri Western on Sunday.
