Senior Day Split with the Jennies

Kearney, Neb. – Junior center fielder Eden McNally hit a walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Central Missouri, 1-0, in game one of a double header Friday afternoon at Patriot Park.

The Jennies scored six times in the third inning in game two and got a five-inning complete game from freshman Brooke Weimer to bounce back, 10-1.

With 10 regular season games left, UNK (15-23, 3-13) is battling Fort Hays State (4-12), Newman and (4-12) Lincoln (4-16) for the 10th and final spot in this year's MIAA Tournament. The Lopers dropped two to Hays earlier this year but face Lincoln tomorrow and Newman next Friday.

It was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel in the early game as freshman Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) battled redshirt junior Page Petefish. Both blanked the opposition for seven innings, allowing just five combined hits and six walks.

With a runner at second and one down in the top of the eighth, Morillas (8-10) had to face UCM's three- and four-hole hitters. She got out of the jam and inning thanks to two flyouts to right and finished the day with five K's, four walks, and three hits allowed over 133 pitches.

"Daniella threw well and grinded threw a couple of innings. What really helped her today was our defense behind her," said UNK head coach Katie Ackermann. "We made some good plays especially in right field (Abbie Jo Gaube) on a couple of wind balls that were coming in."

In the bottom of the inning, senior Sadie Parks came in and redshirt junior catcher Jocelynn Molina (Corona, Calif.) greeted her with a single to right. Sophomore shortstop and leadoff hitter Mary Chvatal (Wahoo) sacrificed her over, but UCM challenged the play via video review. They claimed batter interference as Chvatal was tagged out on the first base line, but the call stood. After pinch runner Kelsey Cordes (Waverly) moved up to third on a wild pitch, McNally delivered a sharp single to right on a 2-1 pitch.

"We took care of business in the field and then gave ourselves a chance in the eighth," said Ackermann. "We finally executed when we needed to."

Weimer (8-9) held UNK in check in game two allowing four hits and three walks in five full innings. She fanned eight and had four shut out innings. At the plate, second baseman Morgan Shields had a three-run triple in the big third inning. The Jens benefitted from a couple of "sun balls" and an error in the inning to grab an 8-0 lead.

"For some reason, we run into a lot of trouble on our own field with the sun. Our pitchers give up more contact, comparable to other teams, so when you're in the field and the sun is straight in your face, we're more at risk for bad things to happen," said Ackermann.

Freshman DP Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) went 2 for 3 to pace UNK with freshman second baseman Alyssa Fortik (Raymond) drawing two walks.

In between games, UNK honored seniors Gaube (Omaha), Carly Dembowski (Lincoln) and Madison Rosenthal (Johnstown, Colo.). Each has spent the past four years in the program.

"This is my first class all the way through. They've just stuck with it; they've stuck with me, they've stuck with the process, they've just stuck with the things we're trying to accomplish," said Ackermann. "I asked them to help me with our culture which needed to change over the last couple of years. They did that, took on some leadership roles and this is the most together team we've had."
