UNK Splits with SAU in Edmond; #29 Women Get Big Regional Win

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams split with Southern Arkansas Saturday morning in Edmond, Okla., the 29th-ranked women upsetting the 12th-ranked Muleriders, 6-1, while the 40th-ranked SAU men won three singles matches in three sets to win, 5-2.

UNK's quick road swing continues Sunday as they face Southeastern Oklahoma State in Edmond. Both the SAU and SEOSU men's matches are MIAA duals; UNK is in the "North" Division" with the 'Riders and Savage Storm "South" Division members.

The Loper women (15-4) notched a key and decisive Central Regional win over an SAU squad (19-3) that had suffered just two prior losses (SEOSU and Lubbock Christian, Texas). While the Blue & Gold dropped the doubles point, they took five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The Muleriders came in with two players having lost only once in singles all season.

Senior lefty and 29th-ranked Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) got past 73rd-ranked Annika Berrendorf by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) count at two with freshman and 31st-ranked Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) rolling at three, 6-3, 6-0. At one, senior Melisa Becerra (Colombia) rallied past Greta Wallin (4-6, 6-1, 6-3) in a battle of two regionally-ranked players. Finally, junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagasar) won 7-5, 6-2 at four to improve to 14-4 on the season.

In doubles, 45th-ranked Becerra and Ranaivo won 6-2 at two to record a 12th straight win and move to 18-1 overall.

The UNK men (12-8, 3-2), having to change up its lineup of late, weren't as fortunate in singles as they lost three setters at two, four and five. The 20th-ranked pair of Tom van den Dungen (The Netherlands) and graduate Aaron Osmond (U.K.) did win at one doubles, 6-2, to up their season mark to 15-3. The other point came when freshman Andy Brisdon (U.K.) won in straight sets at six.
