Lopers Sweep the Savage Storm

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams swept Southeastern Oklahoma State on Sunday morning in Edmond, the 29th-ranked women beating the 39th-ranked Savage Storm, 6-1, and the men winning, 5-2.

In a battle of regionally ranked squads, the Lopers (16-4) took the doubles point from SEOSU (16-7) by winning at two and three. The 45th-ranked pair of Melisa Becerra (Colombia) and junior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) are now 19-1 and riding a 13-match win streak.

In singles, Becerra and freshman Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe) won at two and six in three sets with Midzi rallying from a 4-0 hole to win 10-8. Finally, Ranaivo, junior Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and 31st-ranked Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) all won in straight sets. Ranaivo is now 15-4 and on an 11-match win streak.

The UNK men (13-8) took the doubles point from the Savage Storm (18-8) as 20th-ranked Tom van den Dungen (The Netherlands) and graduate Aaron Osmond (U.K.) won again at one with freshmen Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) coming out on top a three, 7-5. They trailed 3-1 and 5-4 before rallying.

While freshman Jip Mens (The Netherlands) won in straight sets at one singles, all five other matches went three sets. The Lopers took three of them; Osmond at two (6-4, 2-6, 6-3), freshman Ahmed Abdelaziz (Egypt) at six (3-6, 6-1, 6-0) and Bridson at five; 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Both UNK teams finish up the regular season next weekend with trips to Washburn and Northwest Missouri.
