Fit to be Tied ... Lopers Fourth Draw in Five Games

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Anna Thorhallsdottir converted a first half penalty kick to help Nebraska Kearney tie Newman, 1-1, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

The Lopers (2-4-4, 0-1-4) have now had four draws over their last five games. The team had six ties last season with the school-record being seven in 2019.

UNK controlled the action early on and set up for its lone corner at the 19:34 mark of the first half. With the ball in the air, Newman (1-8-2, 0-4-1) was called for a foul in the box on junior Madison Province (Kearney). Thorhallsdottir (Iceland) had the honors of taking the PK and she easily found the back of the net for her second goal of 2025. On the afternoon, she had a team-high three shots.

"I'm proud of Anna. She stepped into a different position today and she showed she's one of the most dangerous players when she's playing up top," said Loper head coach Rob Breton. "She created a lot for us and did a really good job. But we have to do a better job of putting it into the right positions."

In game where NU committed 17 fouls, UNK didn't get a lot going over the final 45 minutes. Reserves Serene Hamzeh (Iowa City) and Mia Lang (Papillion) combined for three shots with senior starter Reagan Downes (Olathe, Kan.) having a shot on goal. NU keeper Carla Apodaca made two saves with counterpart Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) at four.

She would've liked a fifth, but junior Emma Koble scored in the 48th minute to knot things up. A few Jets were near the box with Blair junior Allison Hernandez managing to find Koble amongst the congestion. She turned, fired and managed to get the ball past a reaching Bovaird. It's Koble's fourth goal of the season.

"That's a loss. We gave them a goal, we missed plenty of chances, we weren't composed in the second half, we got lackadaisical," said Breton. "We started thinking that they didn't deserve to be here and they showed us why they are in this conference."

Veterans Keila Gillispie (Newton, Kan.) and Riley Jensen (Bellevue) again went all 90 minutes with sophomore Chloe Edmunds (Boise, Id.) sitting out just the final minute of the opening half.

"We were leading in the first half, and we came out thinking the game was won. We shut off for 20 minutes, they put in a goal that they should've, and from there on we were trying to play catch up," said Breton. "On Sunday, we need a better reaction to everything and focus on execution and consistency. We can't keep doing this hot, cold, hot, cold. At some point we have to be either on or off."

UNK hosts Central Oklahoma on Sunday. The Bronchos (2-4-4, 0-2-2) are at Fort Hays later tonight.
