Fast Second Half Start Not Enough to Catch the Bronchos

Keanrey, Neb. – The Central Oklahoma Bronchos scored on three set pieces to down Nebraska Kearney, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The Bronchos move to 4-4-4 (2-2-2) while the Lopers fall to 2-5-4 (0-2-4). UCO also is 2-0-1 in its last three games.

The 'Chos controlled the action in the first half with freshman Jane Lockhart and senior Rebecca Tweedy scoring for the first time this fall. Lockhart and graduate Rebekah George had a game of give and go off a short corner with Lockhart scoring from about 10 yards out in the 21st minute. Sophomore Kaitlyn Cotton then lined up for a free kick just past midfield 17 minutes later. Her effort bounced in the box with Tweedy heading it in for a 2-0 advantage.

"On the last set piece, it's one of the best goals we've seen. The one where it bounced in the box … we shouldn't let the ball bounce. And their first goal was a deflection off (Keila) Gillispie. It happened to hit her and fell into the front post. On the weekend, of the four goals we have up, two were deflections," said UNK head coach Rob Breton.

UNK came out like a house a fire after the break and had several changes to cut into the deficit. However, 'Chos keeper Avery Bass stopped a PK, one Loper shot banged off the cross bar and couple of others sailed high or wide of the net. Soon after the UNK barrage, Lockhart scored again, this time via free kick near the box.

"Hit the crossbar again, missed three tap ins and a PK but we're in the right spots. That's what we need to focus on," said Breton.

UCO had just one more corner, 5-4, and two more shots, 8-6, over the final 45 minutes. Sophomore Daniella Iaquinta (Aurora, Colo.) had two shots with juniors Anna Thorhallsdottir (Iceland) and Jordan Renard (Lincoln) and senior Mia Lang (Papillion) having shots on goal. Finally, keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) had a season-best 11 saves.

"They reacted the way we needed them to. They did the right thing, they came out and showed exactly why we can beat this team all the time," said Breton. "That's what we focus on; we did the right bit and put ourselves in the right position and making the right combinations. That's what I want us to focus on rather than, honestly, three mistakes that they just capitalized on."

The Lopers head to Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri next weekend.
