Griffs Tally Two First Half Goals to Take Weather Delayed Contest

Kearney, Neb. – The Missouri Western State Griffons scored two first half goals and two keepers combined for five saves in a 2-0 win over Nebraska Kearney Friday night in St. Joesph.

The contest already had a later than usual start (7:30 p.m.) and then at the midpoint of the first half things were halted due to inclement weather. After a bit of a delay the contest resumed and wrapped up around 10 p.m.

UNK out shot the Mo West, 8-6, and was credited with one more shot on goal, 6-5. However, the Griffs had five more corners and scored about 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after Mother Nature interrupted things.

A long possession finally ended when freshman Rosemary Pujado sent a cross in from the right wing. Senior Rachyl Benavides was there for a left foot, low tap in and her third goal of the fall. In the 38th minute, UNK (2-6-4, 0-1-4) set up for a goal kick and kept it on the ground. However, sophomore reserve Alyssa French recoded a steal around the 20-yard line and the fired away to score for the first time in 2025.

Junior Katie Stoskopf worked the final 45 minutes in goal for the Griffs (7-1-3, 3-1-2) and made four saves with sophomore Morgan Byrd stopping one shot before. The Mo West defense was then credited for a save in the 10th minute.

Senior Kea Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) had two shots on goal to lead the Lopers with senior Mia Lang (Papillion) having two shots as well with one on point. Off the bench, senior Gracie Perez (Kearney) and sophomore Serene Hamzeh (Iowa City) had shots and each recorded at least 25 minutes. Finally, keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln) had three saves.

UNK heads to 21st-ranked NW Missouri State (8-3-0, 5-1-0) on Sunday afternoon.
