Lopers Finish Strong to Sweep the Tigers

Kearney, Neb. – Outside hitters Carly Purdy and Emilee Lane combined for 21 kills to help fourth-ranked Nebraska Kearney over Fort Hays State (-22, -23, -13) Saturday evening in Kansas.

The Lopers take the season series from the Tigers (14-8, 3-7) and improve to 21-2 (8-2).

It was a battle in each of the first two sets as there were five lead changes and 20 ties. However, UNK held Hays under .145 in each set while finishing strong. The Lopers broke a 22-22 tie in set one thanks to a solo block by Kansas sophomore Brynn Stowell, a combined block from Lane and Missouri junior Mia Berg and a combined block from Berg and Stowell. In set two, UNK broke a 21-21 tie thanks to kills by Stowell and Lane. Two more kills then made it 2-0 on the scoreboard.

Lane haunted the Tigers once again, hitting .360 while providing 10 kills, three digs and two block assists with Purdy at a match-high 11 kills in 34 swings. Finally, Stowell was at eight kills and seven digs with Indiana junior libero Ellie Spang providing 16 digs and two assists. 

The Tigers were paced by Gracie Rains (14 kills) and Kirsten Evans (15 digs).

UNK heads to Newman and Pittsburg State next weekend.
