Trick or Treat ... Lopers Select Halloween Win over Rogers

Story Links

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Jordan Renard scored in the first half and senior Kea Barnes added an insurance goal after the break to help Nebraska Kearney defeat Rogers State, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The Lopers (3-8-4, 1-5-4) keep their MIAA Tournament hopes alive as they now have seven league points while Hillcats (2-7-6, 2-5-3) remain at nine. Both teams have two games remaining.

UNK, now 2-2-2 all-time vs. RSU, weathered storms at the start of both halves. Senior Kenzie Macklin had a shot bang off the crossbar just two minutes into the action, but the Lopers quickly countered with shots in the third and sixth minutes. Eight minutes after the break, junior Kelsey Hogan banged a free kick off the crossbar from nearly 40 yards out. Riley Jensen

"I loved everything about today. The effort was there, the commitment was there, they did not give up no matter what point of the game we were in," said Loper head coach Rob Breton. "When Rogers was on their front foot, we handled it very well. We didn't shut down, we didn't give in. Yes, they created opportunities which is going to happen in a game. But it's how you responded…do you think oh my gosh they are getting these chances so it's just going to keep happening. Or do we adjust, fix it and keep going forward. They got it and it clicked today."

In the 17th minute, Barnes (Aurora, Colo.) was free on the left wing and sent a pass to senior Iliana Wurzbacher (Wichita) in the box. She got past a 'Cat and dropped off a pass that Renard (Lincoln NE) tapped in for her third career goal. UNK added to its lead 17 minutes into the second half when freshman reserve Shaeley Reichmuth (Omaha Skutt) worked her way to the end line and sent a beautiful cross that Barnes hit in for career goal number two.

"Two beautiful, well-designed goals and the way we were working on it all week. You can see a weight lifted off the girls and so can we keep this momentum going over the next two games and gives us a chance for playoffs," said Breton.

Rogers got off four more shots, 12-8, and three more corners, 8-5, but UNK's defense fought off everything. Junior keeper Susie Bovaird (Lincoln East) made six saves with defenders Riley Jensen (Bellevue East) and Keila Gillispie (Newton, Kan.) once again going all 90. Finally, Barnes had a team-high three shots.

UNK hosts Northeastern State on "Senior Day" Sunday at high noon. The RiverHawks (8-6-1, 3-5-1) have 10 league points and are at Fort Hays State Friday night.
