Early Goal Lifts RiverHawks on UNK Senior Day

Keanrey, Neb. – Senior Sydney Taylor scored her eighth goal of the season to help Northeastern State get by Nebraska Kearney, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The RiverHawks (10-6-1, 5-5-1) win a third straight game while the Lopers fall to 3-9-4 (1-6-4) with one contest remaining. That'll come Wednesday night at Fort Hays State.

"This was a good year at home for us. We only lost three times (2-3-3) and all three were tight battles. We've started to grow and turn this place into a hard and difficult place to play at," said UNK head coach Rob Breton. "We're proud of the fight of the girls and all the effort that they've put in."

Going against a stiff wind in the first half, UNK had two early corners and shots by senior Keila Gillispie (Newton, Kan.) and junior Iliana Wurzbacher (Wichita). However, both were wide of the 'Hawks goal. A senior, Taylor tallied the afternoon's lone goal when she headed in a cross from sophomore Hannah Anderson. That came in the 13th minute with Taylor having a game-high four shots. NSU ended the day with three more corners, 8-5, and six more shots, 11-5.

"We were doing really well for the first 25 minutes. We were all over them and jumping on our opportunities. We had some great chances in the first five minutes but once they got that goal, it was a punch to the mouth," said Breton. "We had to regroup and then maybe 10 minutes later, we started creating more chances. To do that facing a 20-mile per hour wind shows that we've made some progress in those areas."

Idaho sophomore Chloe Edmunds almost tied things up two minutes into the second half but her attempt was just high of the crossbar and resulted in a 'Hawks goal kick. Before the break, Lincoln junior Jordan Renard had a shot on goal.

"(The near miss) is a lot of our season. It's absolutely frustrating the outcome isn't what we want but we have to understand and appreciate the process and progress," said Breton. "This year, the chances have been created but we just can't get them to fall. At the end of the day, I gave them credit for being in the right spot at the right time. Couple inches here and there…it's a completely different season for us."

Hays (3-11-2, 1-8-2) tied Rogers State, 1-1, later Sunday.

"This is a very special senior class because they've experienced my entire coaching tenure. They've been through every up and down I've experienced as a head coach. Going 0-15-3 as freshmen to 8-6-5 and making playoffs last year…you've seen the progress that we've made," said Breton.
