UNK Sweeps CMU at the Grundy

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams swept Colorado Mesa by identical 6-1 scores Friday at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The now 16th-ranked women (6-1) beat the Mavericks for the second time this year while the men (6-4) avenge a 5-2 setback to CMU in the fall.

It was a battle for the women's doubles point as seniors Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Masha Hatouka (Belarus) won 6-4 at two with senior Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) and sophomore Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe) rallying from a 5-4 hole to win 7-5 at one. UNK also won at three to move to a perfect 20-0 in dual doubles matches. Finally, all six singles matches were decided in straight sets with Bernthal not allowing a point at four and Lincoln redshirt junior Clare Plachy giving up just two at six.

Earlier in the day in the men's dual, junior Alex Jaulin (Australia) and freshman Ivan Melnik (German) recorded a 7-6 (4) win at two to secure the doubles point. They rallied from a 5-3 hole to force a tiebreaker and then came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 7-4. Next, sophomore Adrian Constantin (Romania) had to work hard to sweep at three singles (7-6, 7-6) with sophomore southpaw Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) doing the same at five (6-3, 7-6). Finally, Jaulin won in three sets at six.

The Lopers battle Rockhurst on Sunday with the Hawks facing the Mavericks tomorrow.
