Lopers Sweep the Hawks to End February Homestand

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams finished up a long home stand by sweeping Rockhurst, 7-0 (women) and 5-2 (men), Sunday at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The 16th-ranked Loper women (7-1) went 4-1 at home this month with the young men's squad (6-6) posting a 4-3 mark. They also had a mid-week match at Creighton on Feb. 11.

In the morning, seniors Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Masha Hatouka (Belarus) managed a 7-5 victory at two doubles to give the Lopers the team point. They got out to a 3-1 lead and then scored the last three points of the match.

At one singles, 35th-ranked Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) swept 44th-ranked Ella Coleman, 6-4, 6-3, with sophomore Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe) getting past Zuzanna Szmyd in three sets at three. She won the tie-breaker 10-8 in a set that featured seven ties. Finally, Bernthal didn't allow a single point in sweeping four singles.

The men welcomed the return of graduate Aaron Osmond (U.K.) who hadn't played since the fall. He and sophomore Jip Mens (Netherlands) won 6-4 at three as did sophomore Tom van den Dungen (Netherlands) and Adrian Constantin (Romania) at one. Neither pair trailed on the afternoon. Finally, UNK secured the dual by winning two through five singles. Sophomore southpaw Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) won in three sets at four, van den Dungen overcame a 4-1 deficit in his first set at five to win, 7-5, with Constantin sweeping 21st-ranked Louis Keiner at two, 6-4, 6-3.

The Lopers head to Arkansas next weekend to face Harding, Ouachita Baptist (men) and Arkansas Tech (women).
