First Trip to Branson Yields 3-1 Record

Kearney, Neb. – Senior second baseman Rylyn Nelson hit a Grand Slam and junior Madeline Janssen threw five shutout innings to help Nebraska Kearney beat Crowley's Ridge (Ark.) College, 8-0, Tuesday morning in Branson, Mo.

The game was part of the weather-delayed "Turf's Up Invitational". In the afternoon, the Lopers (7-5) fell to Morningside (Ia.) University, 6-4.

Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) struck out four, issued no walks and needed just 58 pitches to get through the Pioneers (1-5) lineup. At the plate, Nelson (Sterling, Colo.) gave her all the support she needed by belting a two-out Grand Slam in the bottom of the first. Including three years at Northeastern (Colo.) J.C., Nelson is up to 81 career dingers.

Also for UNK, junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Mary Chvatal (Wahoo) went 3 for 3 with an run and RBI and sophomore catcher and three-hole hitter Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) was 2 for 2 with two runs. Third baseman and nine-hole hitter Olivia Lanham (2 for 2) led CRC from Paragould, Ark.

The Mustangs (5-2) bested the Lopers by scoring four times in the third and twice in the fourth. Gretna junior Morgan Secora (2-0) worked around five walks and eight hits to get the win with Omaha Gross graduate Jordan Skradski working a clean seventh to get the save.

Stranding eight on the base paths and committing three errors, UNK was led by junior third baseman Alyssa Fortik (2 for 4, two RBI's), Chvatal (1 for 2, one run & two walks) and Nelson (2 for 3, two runs).  Finally, five different Mustangs recorded a single with designated player Paige Schuster having two RBI's.

UNK returns to Branson for the "Showtime Classic" this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-Mar. 1). The opponents will come from the Great Lakes Valley Conf. (Truman State, Lincoln and Missouri S & T) and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conf. (Winona State).
