Lopers Fall to Blue Tigers & Warriors on Day One

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team fell to Lincoln University, 6-0, and Winona (Minn.) State, 5-2, Friday afternoon in Branson, Mo.

The games are part of the Showtime Classic with the Lopers (7-7) facing Missouri S&T (2-12) and Truman State, Mo. (12-9) on Saturday.

In the second game against the WSU Warriors (9-1), Lincoln senior first baseman Leah Jurgens had an RBI single in the first and Wahoo junior shortstop Mary Chvatal had an RBI double in the seventh. However, UNK stranded seven overall and was blanked for five straight innings.

Junior Izzy Howe (6-0) threw a complete game six hitter that featured nine fly outs and nine strikeouts. Offensively, Winona got a three-run homer from sophomore second baseman Alyssa Woelfel (3 for 4) with sophomore left fielder Kiley Slaats adding a two-run triple.

Chvatal (2 for 4, one run) paced the Lopers at the plate with freshman Jerzie Schindler (Central City) going the distance in the circle. Throwing 123 pitches, she fanned seven, walked just one and coaxed WSU to ground out 11 times.

Lincoln sophomore Abby Pulliam (4-1) tossed a no-hitter in the early game as she fanned five and worked around four walks and a leadoff error in the seventh. Throwing 125 pitches, she recorded eight fly outs and eight ground outs.

The Blue Tigers (6-6) took advantage of four Loper errors to score five unearned runs with freshman catcher Faith Jurgens (1 for 2, three RBI's) leading at the plate. Blair freshman Kalli Ulven was the tough luck loser, scattering six hits and issue two walks over six innings. She fanned five in throwing 116 pitches.
