First Homestand Ends with Split; Final Tourney Begins Friday

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman Kalli Ulven and sophomore Daniella Morillas combined on a four-hitter and two players had two RBI's apiece to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Chadron State, 5-2, in game one of a double header Wednesday afternoon at Dryden Park.

UNK (10-12) was poised for a sweep but left the bases full in both the fifth and sixth innings to fall, 3-2, in game two. Chadron is now 9-13 with this the first double header between the two in eight years. Mary Chvatal

Ulven (Blair) earned her second win by allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks in five full innings. Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) then worked around three walks and a hit to blank the Eagles in the sixth and seventh. At the plate, sophomore catcher Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) went 2 for 3 with a run, two RBI's and her second career ding with senior center fielder Eden McNally (Castle Rock, Colo.) 3 for 3 with two RBI's from the six-hole.

The Lopers scored single runs in the first and third innings and then had a three-run fifth. CSC stranded 10 on the base paths with Elkhorn freshman Belle Akins throwing a nine-hit complete game and Aliyah Roths finishing 2 for 3.

An RBI single from senior second baseman Rylyn Nelson (Sterling, Colo.) gave UNK a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the night cap. Morillas no-hit the Eagles over the first four innings, but they led off the fifth with a double to start a two-run rally. Adding an insurance run in the sixth, reliever Tori Haug got out of big jams in the fifth and sixth innings and then worked a clean seventh.

The Lopers came in 7 for 14 with the bases loaded but fouled out to first to end the fifth and grounded out to first in the sixth. Haug earned her fourth win by working around three walks and three hits with starter Destrie Greiman allowing one earned over the first 4.1 innings. At the plate, third baseman Brogan Allen led off the sixth with a homer to left center to break a 2-2 tie.

For the Blue & Gold, Morillas struck out six in 5.1 innings with redshirt junior Madeline Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) throwing up zeroes for 1.2 innings.

UNK heads to Pittsburg, Kan., and Joplin, Mo., for its final tournament of the season. They'll play five games in three days, starting Friday afternoon.
