Lopers Split with Flyers & Rambelles; Tough Saints Squads Up Tuesday

Kearney, neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams split on day one of its annual Spring Break trip, the men sweeping Lewis (Ill.), 7-0, and the seventh-ranked women losing a heartbreaker to 18th-ranked Angelo (Texas) State, 4-3, Sunday in Orlando.

The matches were held at the USTA National Campus with the Lopers off until a Tuesday trip to St. Augustine.

The men (7-9) dominated a Flyers squad (0-6) still looking for its first dual win of the year. UNK's other 7-0 victory this season came against Hastings College in early February.

The Lopers won at two and three doubles by identical 6-2 scores and then swept five of the six singles matches. Sophomore Andy Brisdon (U.K.) was perfect at six (-0, -0) with nationally-ranked Adrian Constantin (Romania) and Jip Mens (Netherlands) doing the same in the top two spots.

On the women's side, the Rambelles (11-0) won at five and six singles to rally past the Lopers. A five-match streak ends with UNK dropping to 9-2 on the year.

ASU allowed seven combined points to win at two and three doubles with Jessica Li winning in straight sets at three to tally the second team point. The 'Belles needed to rally and both Avery Durham at five (-3, 2-6, -4) and Ivet Stancheva (4-6, -3, -3) at six won in three sets. For UNK, 59th-ranked Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) swept 27th-ranked Margaux Rene with ninth-ranked Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) and senior Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) having the same results at one and four.

The Flagler College Saints will provide a stiff test as the men are ranked second and the women sixth.
