UNK Splits with UT Tyler to Finish Up Spring Break Trip

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Fabiana Gamboa and senior Alexis Bernthal won at one and three singles to help 14th-ranked Nebraska Kearney rally past 38th-ranked Texas-Tyler, 4-3, Friday morning in Orlando.

This was the Lopers third and final "Spring Break" dual. On the men's side, eighth-ranked UTT Patriots (13-2) downed 29th-ranked UNK, 5-2.

On the women's side, the Lopers moved ahead 1-0 as the top two doubles teams won by identical 6-2 scores. However, the Pats won in straight sets at five and six singles with freshman Natalia Gorzny winning in three sets at two (-2, 5-7, -0) to make it 3-2. UNK's second point came after 69th-ranked Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe) won at four (-2, -4).

Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) took care of French freshman Carla Rodier in two sets (-6, -4) with eighth-ranked Gamboa going overtime to get past another French freshman in Yona Bancarel (4-6, -2, -3). Bernthal moves to 126 career combined wins with Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) at 161. Emma Neil ('18) holds the school record with 167.

Graduate Aaron Osmond (U.K.) and sophomore Tom van den Dungen (Netherlands), who are regionally-ranked, won at two doubles with van den Dungen taking his four singles match as well (4-6, -3, 3-2; retirement). UNK's other point came when sophomore Andy Brisdon (U.K.) won in straight sets at six.

Tyler won a close match at three doubles, 7-6 (-5), and then won four singles matches in straight sets.

Both squads are at Northwest Missouri next Saturday with the women then facing Missouri Western and the men William Jewell on Sunday.
