Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Women Rally to Beat the Bearcats; Morning Duals on Sunday

Kearney, Neb. – The 12th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women's tennis team won four through six singles to rally past Northwest Missouri State, 4-3, Saturday evening in Maryville.

Due to weather, both duals were moved up with the Bearcat men (7-6, 3-1 MIAA) besting 36th-ranked UNK by a 5-2 margin.

It didn't look good for the Loper women (11-3, 1-0) who lost the doubles point and then dropped two of the first three singles matches in three sets. Because of the time change, the last  three singles matches -- four through six -- didn't start until one through three were complete.

The UNK comeback started when sophomore Tanya Midzi (Zimbabwe) won by retirement at four (-4, ret) and then Lincoln redshirt junior Clare Plachy won in straight sets at six (-3, -4). It thus came down to Belarus senior Masha Hatouka at five and she delivered with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 decision at five. She led 4-1 in the third set and then scored the final two points to record her 107th career victory.

The Loper men (7-12, 0-2) weren't as fortunate as they suffered 7-6 losses at both two (7-1) and three (7-5) doubles. That gave Northwest (7-6, 3-1) a 1-0 lead and one they wouldn't relinquish. The 'Cats are now 15-1 in this series since March 2010.

Sophomore and 37th-ranked Jip Mens (Netherlands) continues an outstanding year with a straight sets win at two (-4, -6; 7-3) with sophomore Andy Brisdon (U.K.) doing the same at six (-6; 7-3: -4). Mens is now 15-4 in dual singles matches with Brisdon moving to 9-7.

On Sunday, the women face Missouri Western State (10 a.m.) and the men William Jewell (7:30 a.m.). Both duals will be held indoors at the Genisis Complex
