Lopers & Bearcats Split on Blustery Day at the Ballpark

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team got a two-run walk off single from senior center fielder Eden McNally and won a video challenge to slip past Northwest Missouri State, 4-3, in game one of double header Saturday afternoon at Dryden Park.

On a dusty and gusty day at the park, the Bearcats responded with a 9-0 win in game two. The original schedule had Northwest (12-17, 2-6) coming to UNK (16-15, 2-4) earlier this month but the 'Cats and Missouri Western State flipped dates.Alivia De La Cruz

Battling strong winds out of the South all day, the Lopers led game one 2-0 after four complete but Northwest scored once in the fifth and two in the sixth. The 'Cats turned to closer Rien Moore in the seventh, but she issued three walks to load the bases with one down. McNally (Castle Rock, Colo.) registered a single to left that scored senior pinch runner Kelsey Cordes (Waverly) with junior shortstop Mary Chvatal (Wahoo) called out at the plate. However, a video review overturned the call to make it a two-run, walk off single instead of a tie game with two down.

McNally (2 for 4, three RBI's) and Chvatal (1 for 2, two walks) paced the offense with senior second baseman Rylyn Nelson (Sterling, Colo.) having a sac but in the seventh and her 300th collegiate hit, a single, in the third. Finally, sophomore Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) picked up a win by allowing one earned in two innings of work.

Junior Jaydn Streigle (3-5) threw a complete game seven-hit shutout in the night cap to lead the 'Cats. She retired 10 in a row at one point with her off speed stuff leading to four K's and just one walk. Northwest had a five-run third and a four-run seventh and ended with 10 hits and five walks.

Sophomore catcher Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) and senior first baseman Leah Jurgens (Lincoln) both went 2 for 3 with senior right fielder Grace Lubben (3 for 4, two runs & two RBI's) pacing Northwest. Finally, "Senior Day" activities also included catcher/outfielder Madisyn Simms (Canada), first baseman/DP Addy Deal (Ft. Collins, Colo.) and pitcher Lauryn Haggadone (York) who will attend Nursing school next year.

UNK visits Emporia State and Washburn next weekend.
