Lopers Get the Brooms Out, Sweep the 'Bods in Topeka

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt junior Madeline Janssen picked up two saves and Nebraska Kearney had 18 hits to sweep Washburn, 3-2 and 8-5, Saturday in Topeka, Kan.

The Lopers (18-17, 4-6 MIAA) hand the Ichabods (24-15, 6-6) just their second and third home losses of the year.

In game one, UNK tallied three in its half of the fourth to break a scoreless tie. A leadoff error started the rally with a sac bunt, walk, single and double providing damage. Redshirt freshman catcher Kendall Kersey (Parker, Colo.) had a two-out, run scoring single up the middle with senior first baseman Leah Jurgens (Lincoln) smacking a two-run run double to right center.

Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) threw two scoreless innings to earn her third save with sophomore Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) working the third fourth and fifth innings to earn her fifth win. Finally for the Lopers, sophomore catchers Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) went 2 for 3 from the six-hole.

In the nightcap, Janssen again blanked the 'Bods over the final two innings with Blair freshman Kalli Ulven (4-7) allowing two earned in 3.1 innings of relief work. She threw three shutout innings to start game one.

UNK scored in four different innings with sophomore third baseman Alyssa Fortik (Raymond) hitting her second career homer and the top of the order a combined 5 for 10 with five runs and four RBI's. Finally, Galli was 2 for 2 as the designated player.

Washburn started the sixth with a home run and then had the tying run at first, but Janssen got three straight outs to quash a potential rally. She then worked around an infield single in the seventh to earn another save.

Nationally-ranked Rogers State and Northeastern State come to Dryden Park next weekend to finish up the 2025 home slate.
