Lopers Earn Split with No. 11 Rogers State; Final Home Games on Monday Afternoon

Kearney, Neb. - Junior Madeline Janssen and freshman Kalli Ulven combined on a five-hitter and three different players and an RBI as Nebraska Kearney upset 11th-ranked Rogers State, 5-2, in game one Sunday afternoon at Dryden Park.

The Lopers (19-18, 5-7 MIAA) were primed for a sweep in game two, but the Hillcats (28-11, 10-8) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to win, 2-0. The win in game one was UNK's first-ever against RSU in 13 tries.

Facing an offense that came in batting .318 and averaging six runs per game, Ulven (Blair) threw four shutout innings and fanned five. At the plate, UNK got some timely hits off starter Jade Sanders (10-6) and took advantage of three errors. The Lopers scored two in the first inning and three in the second before RSU tried to rally with a two-run fifth. However, Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) earned her fifth save by throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless ball.

Arizona junior left fielder Alivia De La Cruz (1 for 2, one run), Raymond sophomore third baseman Alyssa Fortik (2 for 3, one run), Colorado senior center fielder Eden McNally (1 for 3) each knocked in a run with Fortik having one of UNK's two doubles. Finally, catcher Abbey Rogers went 2 for 4 with an RBI to place the 'Cats. She entered today batting an even .500 (58 for 116).

Schindler allowed just two hits over the first four 4.2 innings in the nightcap, but RSU starter Harley Cullie (13-4) kept UNK scoreless as well by getting timely outs. The Lopers lead off batter reached safely in each of the first four innings but didn't score. In the bottom of the fifth with two down and two on, shortstop Mariah Belzer bobbled a grounder but tracked down the loose ball and started a 6-2-5 rundown between third and home plate.

Yellin (2 for 3) then belted her team-best 11th homer of the year with one down in the top of the sixth. Leadoff hitter and left fielder Kaylee Lyon (2 for 3) then had a sac fly in the seventh with Cullie throwing a four-hit complete game shutout. She fanned eight and walked one over 130 pitches. For UNK, Schindler left after throwing 53 pitches with McNally and Colorado senior second baseman Rylyn Nelson both having doubles.

UNK closes out its home slate tomorrow at Dryden with two games (1 & 3 p.m.) against Northeastern State. The RiverHawks (13-27, 6-12) split at Fort Hays State on Sunday.
