#5 Bronchos Clip the Lopers in the Seventh

Kearney, Neb. – The fifth-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos used an infield single to slip past Nebraska Kearney, 5-4, in the second game of a double header Friday evening in Edmond.

The Bronchos (35-6, 14-2 MIAA) hit back-to-back homers and scored four runs in two different innings to take game one, 11-0, in five innings. UNK (20-21, 6-10) is still in contention for the 10-team league tournament; they have key games at Newman on Saturday.

In the nightcap, UCO was limited to just one hit over the first four innings by Central City freshman lefty Jerzie Schindler. However, senior first baseman/pitcher Terin Ritz hit her second homer of the day and then UCO drew three walks, and hit a sac fly, to take a 2-0 lead.

Raymond sophomore second baseman Alyssa Fortik walked with the bases juiced in the top of the fifth, but a line out kept the bases full and ended the inning. The 'Chos manufactured two runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a hit batter, triple and sac fly. UNK came back once again as they scored three times in the sixth, two scoring on a pinch-hit single by sophomore Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.). But another lineout ended the inning and stranded two more.

In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff walk and sac bunt put the 'Chos in great position. A single and another walk loaded the bases with junior Kennedy Clark recording a single to first to win the game. Ritz (12-2) picked up the win by throwing the final inning with UNK stranding nine on the base paths.

Schindler (6-7) went the distance, allowing five earned on six walks and four hits. Lincoln senior first baseman Leah Jurgens paced the offense by going 2 for 3 with a run and RBI.

UCO out hit UNK by a 12-4 margin in the first game which include back-to-back solo dingers in the third, three doubles and a triple. Ritz threw four scoreless innings to start the game with junior shortstop Emily Deramus 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI's.

Jurgens recorded five putouts today, pushing her career total to 896. She'll be the sixth Loper to reach the 900 mark; former head coach and first baseman Holly (Waller) Carnes holds the record at 1,184.
