Hello Newman; Lopers Score 23 to Sweep the Jets

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team scored 23 runs to sweep Newman University, 11-10 and 12-6, Saturday afternoon in Wichita.

The Lopers (22-21, 8-10 MIAA) keep their MIAA Tournament hopes alive while the Jets fall to 7-35 (2-16 MIAA).

In game one, Raymond sophomore third baseman Alyssa Fortik hit a "Grand Slam" as UNK hung on for an 11-10 win. The Jets scored six in the sixth and had runners in scoring position in each of the last two innings, but Central City freshman lefty Jerzie Schindler kept them at bay. Four Lopers entered the circle with Schindler picking up her first save of the year. Fortik finished with five RBI's while California sophomore Daniella Morillas recorded her seventh win by throwing 3.1 innings of strong relief.

UNK tallied four in the first and two in the second to lead the nightcap from start to finish. Fortik finished 4 for 5 with three runs and four RBI's with Colorado senior Eden McNally and Canadian senior Madisyn Simms each knocking in three runs. Finally, Iowa redshirt junior Madeline Janssen threw four scoreless relief innings to earn her fourth win.

The Lopers head to Metro State on Tuesday.
