UNK Topples WCU Twice at the SportsPlex

Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team rolled past Western Colorado in a pair of duals, 43-3 and 44-6, Saturday morning at the SportsPlex.

This was the "Younes Hospitality College Duals" but Adams State and Ouachita (Ark.) Baptist had to cancel due to the winter storm. Thus, a varsity and a reserve team from UNK (11-3) and WCU (6-4) were the only competitors in the small tournament. Trenton Munoz

In the 20 dual matches, UNK recorded three forfeits wins, three majors, three falls and six technical falls. Some other matches, outside of the duals, took place as well.

Fifth-ranked Cael Robb (Medford, Minn.) beat 11th-ranked Vinny Cabal at 157-pounds in the only ranked matchup. He recorded a takedown with just nine seconds left to break a 1-1 tie. Also, graduate Daniel DeRoser (Bellevue) had a fall at 2:05 to win at 149 pounds, redshirt freshman Alex Munoz (Santa Clarita, Calif.) had an early takedown and built riding time to win 6-4 at 184 pounds with top-ranked Crew Howard (Clarinda, Ia.) having his fourth straight and fifth fall of the winter.

In the reserve dual, redshirt sophomores Jack Allen (Aurora) and Connor Ritonya (Bennington), redshirt freshman Sam Andres (Lincoln Pius), and true freshmen Sam Nachtigal (Kearney H.S.) and Samuel Watkins (Hoxie, Kan.) all had bonus point victories.

UNK heads to 14th-ranked Central Missouri next Friday night.
