UNK Starts 2026 by Beating the Warriors & Otters

Kearney, Neb. – Junior newcomer Zakayia Fredrick tossed a complete game two-hitter in the season-opener and Nebraska Kearney had a four-run fifth inning in the night cap to beat Jessup (Calif.), 3-0, and Cal State Monterrey Bay, 7-4, Friday in Irvine, Calif.

This is season opening weekend in NCAA Division II with the games part of the Concordia Irvine Kickoff Classic.

A transfer from D2 Texas A&M-International, Frederick (Temple, Texas) needed just 90 pitches to blank the JU Warriors (Rocklin, Calif.). She only gave up a walk in the second, a walk and single in the third and an infield single in the sixth. Earning her seventh career win, she unofficially threw 64 strikes and fanned four.

California natives Daniella Morillas (3 for 3, one RBI) and Gianna Galli (2 for 3) were strong at the dish as was another former TAMUI Dustdevil in outfielder Zaria Brigham (2 for 4, one run). UNK scored twice in the third and then added an insurance run in the seventh. Finally, the Lopers outhit JU by nine but left 12 on base.

Shortstop Maddy Ybarra (1 for 3) and relief pitcher Korrie Almond (4.0 IP, one run) paced Jessup.

Central City sophomore lefty Jerzie Schindler blanked the MB Otters (1-1) over the first four innings in game two. An 4-6 double play ended the fourth, but Monterey came back to score three in the fifth to tie things up. They had four hits and a walk in the frame, but a 2-6-2 double play prevented further damage.

In the bottom of the inning, Wahoo senior shortstop Mary Chvatal (2 for 3, two runs) led off with a walk and scored on a double down the line by Brigham. That would be UNK's only hit but they scored three more times thanks to a walk, two steals, and two Otter errors.

Galli (2 for 2, one run & a RBI) had another productive effort with Colorado redshirt sophomore catcher Kendall Kersey going yard in the second. Finally, Kansas junior newcomer Chloe Odle earned the win by striking out three and allowing one run in 2.2 innings.

UNK faces the CUI Golden Eagles and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
