UNK Beats CUI, Falls to CSUSB

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Zakayia Fredrick pitched another gem and sophomore right fielder Bailey Peterson went 3 for 4 with three RBI's to help Nebraska Kearney beat Concordia-Irvine, 7-3, Saturday afternoon in California.

The game was part of the Concordia Kickoff Classic at Orange County Great Park in Irvine. The tourney features 61 games (five fields) over a three-day period.

UNK (3-1) dropped a Saturday night game to Cal State San Bernardino, 7-2. The Lopers battle Dominican (Calif.) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Central to close out the season-opening weekend.

Fredrick (Temple, Texas) threw a two-hit complete game Friday to beat Jessup (Calif.) and was at it again today. She needed just 73 pitches to get through 6.2 innings with Central City lefty Jerzie Schindler recording the final out thanks to a grounder. Fredrick allowed three earned runs on eight hits (five singles) and no walks while fanning two.

UNK erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring two in the third, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Peterson (Oakdale, Calif.) had a two-run triple in the fifth and added a run scoring single in the sixth. Finally, Wahoo senior shortstop and leadoff hitter Mary Chvatal went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

The tourney host Golden Eagles (2-1) saw Kailani Tatro hit a pinch hit two-run homer with three pitchers giving up 10 hits and five walks.

The Coyotes (2-2) never trailed as they scored one in the bottom of the first, two in the second and four in the third. The top two hitters in the lineup, center fielder Ashley Legler and shortstop Katie Griego, were a combined 5 for 7 with three runs and four RBI's. Starting pitcher Mo Cash worked around five walks to surrender only one run in 4.2 innings.

For UNK, junior newcomer Chloe Odle (Beloit, Kan.) blanked San Bernardino over the final 3.1 innings with sophomore Kalli Ulven (Blair) fanning four and junior left fielder Zaria Brigham going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Dominican (2-2) beat San Bernardino, 11-3 (5 innings), on Saturday but then fell to 14th-ranked Cal State San Marcos, 7-0.
