Penguins Use Big Innings to Waddle to a Win; Chvatal Sets Walk Record

Kearney, Neb. – The Dominican University Penguins had three big innings, and got a combined six hits from Kate Tobola and Kelissa Lee, to beat Nebraska Kearney, 10-4, Sunday afternoon in Irvine, Calif.

This was the final day of the Concordia Kickoff Classic. UNK finished 3-2 with wins over Jessup University (Calif.), Cal State Monterrey Bay and tourney host Concordia University-Irvine.

DUC (San Rafael, Calif.) also went 3-2 this weekend thanks to scoring two in the first, three in the fourth and five (all unearned) in the seventh this afternoon. From the lead off spot, third baseman Tobola was 3 for 4 with a run and three RBI's while Lee, a center fielder, was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI's from the eight hole. Tobola managed a three-run, inside-the-park homer to highlight the top of the seventh, which featured a one our error that got the Penguins going. Three consecutive singles and a strikeout followed before Tobola came up to bat.

UNK saw Texas junior left fielder Zaria Brigham have a two-run single in the second with California junior first baseman Daniella Morillas (2 for 4) bringing her home with a single up the middle. Finally at the plate, Wahoo senior shortstop Mary Chvatal drew three walks, pushing her career to 86. That bests the school record (82) shared by Hall of Famer Darce Berry ('00) and Abbie Jo Gaube ('24). Chvatal broke the mark late Saturday night with a fifth inning walk in a loss to Cal State San Bernardino.

In the circle today, Morillas threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief with Fredrick and Kansas junior Chloe Odle allowing no earned runs in that wild seventh.

The Lopers head to Wayne State next weekend to face the Wildcats and Chadron twice.
