UNK Goes 2-2 at Wayne Dome Tournament

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball went 2-2 this weekend, beating Chadron State twice and falling to Wayne State twice at the Wildcat Dome Classic.

This was UNK's first trip to Wayne in 12 years and they got to take part in the first-ever inside games on campus. The Lopers (5-4) beat the Eagles (0-9) by scores of 6-0 and 7-0 and fell to the 'Cats (4-0) by counts of 6-1 and 4-2.

On Saturday night, junior Chloe Odle (Beloit, Kan.) threw a five-hit shutout, fanning nine and walking none over 105 pitches. It was just a 1-0 UNK lead heading into the seventh inning when junior leftfielder Zaria Brigham (Victoria, Texas) hit a two-run homer to center and then sophomore right fielder Bailey Peterson (Oakdale, Calif.) hit a "Grand Slam" to left. Five players had a multi-hit game including Brigham (3 for 4, one run & three RBI's), Peterson (2 for 4) and California junior third baseman Daniella Morillas (3 for 3, one run).

On Sunday morning, freshman lefty Teilar Fry (Carson, Calif.) needed only 88 pitches to get through seven innings. She tossed a six-hitter that included two K's and just one walk. At the plate, the Lopers scored two in the first and four more times in the third. Peterson (2 for 3, one run & three RBI's) paced an offense that featured six with at least one hit. Finally, right fielder Elia DeLozie went 3 for 3 to lead the Eagles.

Wayne beat UNK twice as they scored nine of its 10 runs in the first inning. On Saturday, the 'Cats out hit the Lopers by a 13-3 margin with sophomore Kennadie Borngrebe fanning 12 and working around five walks. Leadoff hitter Jordyn Klein (3 for 4) and catcher Haylee Weber (3 for 3) provided the most damage at the dish wile Morillas (2 for 3) and Texas junior pitcher Zakayia Fredrick (3.0 scoreless innings) led the Lopers.

Junior Jadeyn Stahr threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to close out the weekend. Wayne used five hits and an error to get out to that 4-0 first inning lead but was shut down by Morillas (5.1 IP, three hits) after that. Klein and shortstop Lillie Timm both went 2 for 3 for the 'Cats with junior second baseman Alyssa Fortik (Raymond) having an RBI.

The Lopers head to Branson, Mo., next weekend (Feb. 13-14) where they'll play four games over two days.
