UNK Battles 'Jays in Omaha

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney men's tennis team won the doubles point but fell at Creighton, 4-2, Thursday in Omaha.

The Bluejays improved to 5-3 while the Lopers fell to 3-1. This was the third season the two met for a dual at CU. UNK will get another crack at a D1 on March 8 (Sun.) when Nebraska Omaha comes to town.

The Lopers jumped out to a 1-0 lead today as they won one and three doubles. The regionally ranked pair of Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and Ivan Melnik (Germany) won 6-4 in the top spot as they rallied from 3-1 and 4-3 deficits. At three, freshman Cesare Carpano (Italy) and junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) scored the last two points to win, 7-5.

In singles, Fuentes got past Irish freshman Jack McMahon (-3, -5) at six to score UNK's other team point. He never trailed in the first set but scored the final three points of the second. Finally, Strzelecki (-5) and Melnik (-6) both dropped close sets.

The Blue & Gold hosts Pratt (Kan.) C.C. tomorrow at 10 a.m. and then Colorado Mesa Saturday at nine. Both duals will be at the Ernest Grundy. Pratt is currently ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
