Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

UNK Has a 2-1 Home Weekend; More Indoor Matches on Deck

Kearney, Neb .- The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams beat Colorado Mesa, 6-1 (men) and 5-2 (women), Saturday at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center in Kearney.

On Friday, the men suffered a 4-3 setback to Pratt (Kan.) C.C. who is ranked second in the junior college ranks. The Beavers also are 2-2 vs. Division I competition this year.

The women (3-0) move to 20-4 vs. the Mavericks (3-5) since Sept. 2009. The Lopers did have to work hard to take the doubles point, winning 7-5 at both one and two. Junior Julia Wartecka (Poland) and freshman Hannah Klaiber (Germany) managed to rally from a 4-2 deficit at two for the key decision.

In singles, Lithuanian freshman Patricija Cechanaviciute upset 35th-ranked Devyn Rodriguez in straight sets at one (-6, -2) with Lincoln redshirt senior Clary Plachy winning at three after taking her third set, 10-5. Finally, Klaiber (-1, -2) and Bolivian freshman Valentina Zamora (-3, -2) rolled at five and six.

The men (4-2) improve to 4-2 vs. CMU (1-4) since the 2009-10 year after taking five of the six singles matches and winning at two and three doubles. Junior Tom van den Dungen (Netherlands) and freshman Ilan Fuentes (France) rallied from a 4-2 hole to win 7-5 at two. In singles, sophomore Ivan Melnik (Germany) and junior Andy Brisdon (U.K.) both beat regionally ranked foes with Fuentes working a bit extra to win at five (-1, -6).

Last year the Blue & Gold dropped a 4-3 decision to PCC as the Beavers won two singles matches in three sets. That scenario happened again at Pratt won three singles matches in three sets. Melnik did beat 19th-ranked Sam Dinnenn (5-7, -0, -4) at two with Australian senior Alex Jaulin rolling at six (-4, -0). Finally, UNK won both two and three doubles.

Midwestern State (Texas) and Rockhurst (Mo.) are coming to the Grundy next weekend.
