Big Home Run Helps UNK Split with SMSU

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Kalli Ulven belted a two-out, three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to help Nebraska Kearney beat Southwest Minnesota State, 4-1, in game two Monday in Sioux Center, Ia.

The Mustangs (6-4) tallied seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take game one, 9-1. The double dip was played indoors at the American State Bank Sports Complex.

Ulven (Blair) didn't register at-bat last year as she was one of UNK's top pitchers (21 appearances, 18 starts). This season, she's still working in the circle but came in today with a single in 13 plate appearances. Ulven entered in the sixth inning as a pinch runner for starting designated player Ashley Duis (Odell). While UNK left the bases full, they had another rally started in the seventh after a double by junior left fielder Zaria Brigham (Victoria, Texas) put runners at second and third.

After SMSU got an infield pop up to record the second out, Ulven stepped to the plate and smacked a shot over the center field fence for UNK's third dinger of the day. Brigham hit a solo shot in game one while sophomore first baseman Katie Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) led off the second with her second career long ball. She finished 3 for 4 as the Lopers out hit the 'Stangs, 10-3.

Junior Chloe Odle (Beloit, Kan.) earned the win by throwing 4.0 innings of scoreless relief. She fanned one and worked around two walks and two singles. Finally, the 'Stangs tried a safety squeeze in the fourth, but UNK got the out at home.

In game one, sophomore Jordyn Marsh (5-0) threw a five inning one-hit complete game. She fanned 10 and walked two with the only blemish being Brigham's shot. SMSU was clinging to a 2-1 lead before a seven-run fifth that featured a walk, five singles and game-ending three-run double. Finally, the 'Stangs seventh through nine-hole hitters were a combined 5 for 9 with three runs and six RBI's.

UNK heads to Shawnee, Kan., this Fri.-Sat. for the "Top Gun Midwest Classic" at Mid-American Sports Complex. The Lopers will see Minnesota State and three Missouri schools; Rockhurst, Southwest Baptist and Truman.
