UNK Falls to the Hawks & Bearcats; Two More Games Saturday

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team fell to Rockhurst (Mo.), 3-1, and Southwest Baptist (Mo.), 5-3, Friday in Shawnee, Kan.

The games are part of the "Top Gun Midwest Classic" at the Mid-America Sports Complex. UNK (9-10) faces Minnesota State (10 a.m.) and Truman State, Mo. (12:15 p.m.) on Saturday.

Against the RU Hawks (5-5), the Lopers left eight on base, including the tying runners at second and third in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Avery Huffman (2-3) tossed a complete five-hitter that included 10 strikeouts while junior Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) allowed just one earned run over the first four innings.

RU used a double steal to get on the board and then added insurance in the fifth and seventh innings with a run scoring single and double. For UNK, sophomore right fielder Bailey Peterson (Oakdale, Calif.) went 3 for 3 with a run scored while junior left fielder Zaria Brigham (Victoria, Texas) was 2 for 4.

SBU (5-9) used the long ball to beat the Lopers at night as sophomore second baseman Emily Titus belted a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh. She finished 2 for 4 with two runs with teammate Jacie Frencken leading off the second with a solo shot.

UNK got big efforts from Peterson (2 for 3, one run) and junior catcher Gianna Galli (3 for 4, one run & two RBI's) but stranded another eight. For the Bearcats, Shalie Wooden (1-2) tossed a complete game eight-hitter, fanning six and working around four walks.
