Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams beat the St. Mary's (TX) University Rattlers, 6-1 (men) and 5-2 (women), Friday evening at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

A young Loper women's squad (3-3) upsets the 13th-ranked Rattlers (4-2) while the UNK men (7-2) continue to roll and gave STMU its first loss in six tries.

On the women's side, UNK swept doubles and three singles matches. All-American Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) and Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) won 6-4 at two with Gamboa taking two singles in straight sets (-5, -1). In the top spot, freshman Patricija Cechanaviciute (Lithuania) was down 5-1 in set one but rallied for a 7-6 (-1) victory. After dropping the second set, she took the third by a 6-4 count. Finally, sophomore Jasmine Ben Aba (Tunisia) won at four (-4, -4).

On the men's side, the three doubles team of junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) and freshman Cesare Carpano (Italy) was down 5-2 but rallied to tie things up at six. However, the Rattlers jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Lopers came back and won, 9-7. Strzelecki then recorded the clinching point at six (-3, -0) after senior Alex Jaulin (Australia) and sophomore Ivan Melnik (Germany) rolled at three and one, respectively.

The Lopers are off until March 7 when the women host Minnesota State. On March 8, the men face Nebraska Wesleyan and Division I Nebraska Omaha at the Grundy.
