Lopers Clipped by the Mavericks and Bulldogs

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney softball team fell to Minnesota State, 6-5 (8 innings), and Truman (Mo.) State, 3-1, Saturday in Shawnee, Kan.

The games were part of the "Top Gun Midwest Classic" at the Mid-America Sports Complex. UNK (9-12) lost to Rockhurst (Mo.) and Southwest Baptist (Mo.) on Friday.

To start the day, the Mavericks (4=1-) rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win in extra innings. Mankato scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and then got the placement runner home in the eighth. The Lopers were limited to three hits and stranded two in the eighth and one in the seventh.

Junior Maddie Oetzmann (2-3) fanned five over 4.2 hitless relief innings to get the win with designated player Hanna Tong (3 for 5, two RBI's) and third baseman Izzy Hycnar (3 for 4, two runs & RBI) leading at the plate. Junior Zakayia Fredrick (Temple, Texas) was the tough luck loser, allowing no earned runs over the final two innings, with freshman infielder Kaycee Graff (Morris, Ill.) and sophomore infielder Kalli Ulven (Blair) having RBI's.

In the afternoon, TSU (5-14) got out to a 2-1 lead and then shut out the Lopers over the final six innings. Senior Lydia Feiste (1-4) threw the first 4.1 innings with junior Jayda Long allowing one hit over the final 2.2 to pick up the save.

UNK got an RBI single from junior left field Zaria Brigham (Victoria, Texas) in the bottom of the first to tie things up, but the 'Dawgs responded quickly. They used a single, walk, and double to retake the lead in the second and then added an insurance run in the fifth.

Junior Chloe Odle (Beloit, Kan.) went the distance for the Lopers, fanning four and walking just one over 85 pitches. Finally, Brigham and sophomore right fielder Bailey Peterson (Oakdale, Calif.) went 2 for 4.

UNK returns to Branson, Mo., next weekend for the "Grand Slam Classic". The Lopers will play six games over three days and face Truman again on Sunday.
