Big Innings Lift LU & UIS Over UNK

Kearney, Neb. – The Lincoln Blue Tigers and Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars used big innings to down Nebraska Kearney, 6-2 and 5-4, Friday in Branson, Mo.

The games are a part of the "Grand Slam Classic" with UNK (9-14) set to play two more games on both Saturday and Sunday.

The improved Blue Tigers (7-2) scored four runs in the top of the second inning with UIS (14-5) tallying four in the bottom of the first. The Stars also got out of a two-out, bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh.

In game one, Lincoln junior Jaedin Blakenship moved to 4-0 by allowing two runs over six full innings. The Blue Tigers used three hits and two walks to get out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Sophomore first baseman Katie Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) hit a two-run homer in the second to provide the offense for the Lopers with freshman lefty Teilar Fry (Carson, Calif.) throwing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

UNK tried to rally from a 5-1 hole in the nightcap against UIS but fell just a bit short. With three home and two down, the Stars got a strikeout to end the rally and game. Junior Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) threw 2.0 scoreless innings and had an RBI in the seventh with juniors Zaria Brigham (Victoria, Texas) and Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) both going 2 for 4.

The Lopers face UIS and LU again on Saturday.
