Lopers Start Spring Break by Beating the C-N Eagles

Keanrey, Neb. – The nationally ranked Nebraska Kearney tennis teams started Spring Break on the right note by sweeping Carson-Newman (Tenn.) Monday afternoon in Rome, Ga.

The 18th-ranked men (9-2) win a sixth straight dual, 6-1, while the 46th-ranked women (5-3) bested the Eagles by a 5-2 score. Both teams remain in Rome on Tuesday to face the hometown Shorter University Hawks.

The men got out to a 1-0 lead by winning 6-1 at both one and three doubles and then took five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Australian senior Alex Jaulin had the toughest battle at four (-5, -4) with French freshman Ilan Fuentes taking his number two match with ease (-0, -1). 

On the women's side, the women swept doubles with the top team of Hannah Klaiber (Germany) and Patricija Cechanaviciute (Lithuania) winning 7-5. Junior Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) swept her two singles match (-3, -2) but the others need to win a third set tie break. Sophomore Jasmine Ben Aba (Tunisia) won 10-2 at four, freshman Valentina Zamora (Bolivia) got out to a 5-1 lead and won 10-5 at five with freshman Augustina Abdo (Ecuador) working through 11 ties and scoring the final three points to win, 16-14.
