Metro Uses Two Big Innings to Remain Hot; Home Opener this Friday

Kearney, Neb. – The Metro State Roadrunners used two big innings to take a double header from Nebraska Kearney, 11-1 (5 innings) and 3-1, Tuesday afternoon in Denver.

The 'Runners (20-6) have now won 10 in a row while this was the Lopers' first action in nine days. These were also UNK's final non-conference games of 2026.

Metro had a 10-run first inning in game one and a three-run fourth in game two. Senior Samantha Mader (3-1) worked around six walks and two hits in game one thanks to seven strikeouts. She threw 109 pitches over five innings to record her first complete game. Next, freshman relief pitcher Kianna Butler (5-1) got out of a bases loaded, no out situation in the fourth and didn't allow a hit the rest of the way.

In game one, the 'Runners used nine hits, two Loper errors and two walks to throw up a 10 spot in their first at bat of the day. Freshman lefty Teilar Fry (Carson, Calif.) settled in and allowed only one earned run over the final 3.2 innings while fanning two and walking one. At the plate, both junior Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) and freshman Kaycee Graff (Morris, Ill.) walked twice. Finally, Metro sophomore left field Natalie Shellhorn had a three-run double to pace a 12-hit attack.

UNK used a wild pitch to score in the top of the fourth in game two to briefly take a 1-0 lead. However, redshirt sophomore first baseman Trinity Kennemer hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning and then freshman Neila Lucero shortstop followed with an RBI double.

Junior Chloe Odle (Beloit, Kan.) went the distance, allowing three earned on six walks and eight hits. Fanning three, she threw 123 pitches. Next, three different Lopers walked twice including junior catcher Kendall Kersey (Parker, Colo.). Finally, Kennemer finished 2 for 2 and had four putouts in the field.

The Lopers have their home opener this Friday vs. nationally ranked Pittsburg State (26-1) at the newly renovated Dryden Park. Games are set for 2 and 4 p.m.
