Lopers Fall in Columbus; UWA Up Next

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams fell to the Columbus (Ga.) State Cougars Friday in Columbus, Ga.

The sixth-ranked Cougar men improved to 8-0 after a 7-0 win over the 34th-ranked Lopers (10-3). UNK had won its past seven duals. Next, the 20th-ranked CSU women (5-2) got past the Blue & Gold, 5-2, thanks to several close decisions.

On the men's side, Columbus won a couple of close doubles matches and took two singles matches in three sets. The Cougars scored the final three points to win 6-3 at three doubles but junior Tom van den Dungen (The Netherlands) and freshman Illan Fuentes (France) rallied at two to win, 6-4. In the top spot, junior Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and sophomore Ivan Melnik (Germany) rallied from a 5-2 hole to tie things up at six. They were up 2-0 in the tie break but CSU came back to win, 7-4, and take a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard.

In singles, both Brisdon and Fuentes won their second sets to tie things up, but the Cougs took each in three with senior Alex Jaulin (Australia) battling at three but falling (-4, -4).

The Loper women (6-4) fell out of the most recent national rankings but junior Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) won in straight sets at two (-4, -4) and sophomore Jasmine Ben Aba (Tunisia) won at four thanks to a third set victory (-4). However, CSU won in three sets at both five and six singles and also took the doubles point.

UNK returns to Rome, Ga., on Saturday to face West Alabama.
