Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams split with Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, the 32nd-ranked men winning 5-2 and the women falling by the same score.

Due to high winds, the duals were moved inside to the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center. On Sunday, the Loper women (6-6, 0-1) host Missouri Western (8-2, 0-0) at Harmon Park. First serve is at 11 a.m. Illan Fuentes

The men (11-4, 2-0) avenged a 5-2 loss to the Bearcats (6-7, 0-1) from a year ago by winning at both one and two doubles and winning four singles battles.

The 23rd-ranked pair of Andy Brisdon (U.K) and Ivan Melnik (Germany) won 6-4 in the top spot with both then winning their singles matches thanks to a 6-2 tally in the third set. Melnik, winning 7-6 (-4) in set one, had the clinching point. Finally, junior Jakub Strezlecki (Poland) and freshman Ilan Fuentes (France) rolled at five and six to give UNK a comfortable 3-1 lead.

The Bearcats women (11-3, 3-0) got off to a 1-0 advantage thanks to a 7-6 (-3) win at one doubles and a 6-3 decision at three. They then won three through six singles, including two in three sets. Junior Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) and Patricija Cechanaviciute (Lithuania) each won in straight sets to get UNK on the board.

The Loper men are now off until next Friday at Emporia State.
