UNK Splits with Hornets in Pushed Back Dual

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams split their dual Monday at Emporia State, the women winning, 5-2, and the 21st-ranked men falling, 6-1.

This trip to Kansas was set for last weekend but pushed back a few days due to weather. UNK heads to Washburn on Tuesday to battle the 10th-ranked Ichabod men and a 17th-ranked women's squad.

In the early dual, the Loper women (7-7, 1-2) won at three doubles and took four straight singles matches to dispatch of the Hornets (8-7, 2-1). UNK is now 15-2 vs. E-State since the spring of 2010.

The doubles point came down to three with junior Julia Wartecka (Poland) and freshman Valentina Zamora (Mexico) scoring the final three points to come out on top, 7-5. While the Hornets swept at six singles to tie things up, UNK won the next four matches to secure the dual. That included junior Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) sweeping at two (-4, -6; 7-5) and freshman Patricija Cechanaviciute (Lithuania) needing a third set at one (-4, 1-6, -4).

The UNK men (11-5, 2-1) weren't so lucky in the evening as ESU (8-6, 2-0) swept singles, winning four in three sets. The Lopers allowed eight combined points in doubles with junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) and freshman Cesare Carpano (Italy) rallying from a 4-3 hole at three to win, 7-5. But E-State pulled off a rare 6-0 singles record as they won in three sets at six, five, three and two. UNK took the first set in three of these matches.
