UNK Splits in St. Joe

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Chloe Odle threw a six-hit complete game to help Nebraska Kearney down Missouri Western, 5-1, in the second game of a double header Saturday afternoon St. Joseph.

The Griffons (25-9, 5-5 MIAA) tallied seven runs in their first at-bat of the day to take game one in five innings, 10-2. The double dip was moved back one hour due to cold and windy conditions with UNK now 13-22 (2-4).

Odle (Beloit, Kan.) tossed 123 pitches to record her seventh win and seventh complete game. She coaxed the Griffs into 12 fly outs, got one strikeout and a ground ball double play. At the plate, sophomore first baseman Katie Janssen (Earlham, Ia.) had a two-out, two-run single to highlight a three-run fourth. With the bases loaded, the Lopers tied the game via a wild pitch. In the fifth, they added two more runs thanks to a MWSU infield error.

In game one, the Griffs big seven-run first featured four hits and two Loper errors. Leadoff hitter Kalee Higdon reached via an infield error to start the rally and then had a two-run triple as the Griffs batted around.

Senior Torie Sandoval (8-3) tossed a six-hit complete game as she walked just one and blacked UNK over the first three innings. Finally, the Lopers got a two-run homer from sophomore catcher Kendall Kersey (Parker, Colo.).

UNK returns home next weekend to face Washburn and Emporia State at Dryden Park.
