Fredrick Throws Shut Out, De Jong Goes Yard in Game Two Win

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Zakayia Fredrick threw a six-hit shut out and freshman Aubrey De Jong hit her first collegiate homer to help Nebraska Kearney salvage the second game of a double header with Newman, 2-0, Saturday evening at Dryden Park.

Junior designated player Audry Rumsey homered twice and recorded six RBIs to help the Jets (10-35, 5-14) take game one, 11-7. UNK trailed 9-0 after two complete but almost completed the comeback. However, they left two runners stranded in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Fredrick (Temple, Texas) picked up her third win by recording eight ground outs, 10 fly outs and fanning one. Issuing only two walks, she also benefited from a video review. Newman had apparently tied the game at one in the fourth, but catcher AJ Borja was called for leaving second early and thus nullifying the run. In game one, she was called out leaving first base early.

DeJong (Aurora, Colo.) made it a 1-0 game in the third with a shot over the left field fence with sophomore right fielder Bailey Peterson (Oakdale, Calif.) providing some insurance with an RBI single in the sixth. Finally, NU appeared to have a no-out, runners at first and second situation in the seventh, but first baseman Emma Taylor took off after UNK (14-33, 3-15) bobbled the relay throw. De Jong was Johnny-on-the-spot, picking up the loose ball and firing to third base for the punch out Taylor.

Fredrick also threw well in game one, allowing one earned over the final 4.1 innings. Both senior center fielder Aliva De La Cruz (Mesa, Ariz.) and junior second baseman Gianna Galli (Stockton, Calif.) had three hits with freshman first baseman Kaycee Graff (Morris, Ill.) recording her first collegiate dinger.

Besides Rumsey's heroics, Borja (2 for 3, two runs & two RBI's) and shortstop Lani Dryden (2 for 4, two runs & two RBI's) were strong at the plate with senior Katelyn Westover getting the win thanks to 3.1 innings of solid relief.

UNK heads to Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri next weekend.
