Bearcats Win Pitchers Duels

Kearney, Neb. – The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats won a pair of pitchers' duels, 4-1 and 1-0, over Nebraska Kearney Friday afternoon in Maryville.

The 'Cats move to 31-18 (10-12) while the Lopers fall to 14-35 (3-17). Northwest now has a 15-13 series edge over UNK since 2010.

Juniors Zakayia Fredrick (Temple, Texas) and Chloe Odle (Beloit, Kan.) tossed their fourth and 10th complete games, respectively, but were out dueled by just a bit. Northwest senior Jadyn Streigle (15-7) tossed a three-hitter in game one with sophomore Rien Moore (12-6) having a four-hit shut out in the night cap.

In the opener, Northwest used an RBI single and a fielder's choice to score two in the second. After Raymond junior third baseman Alyssa Fortik brought home a run thanks to a sac bunt in the fourth, the 'Cats struck for two more in the fifth.

Over 90 pitches, Fredrick allowed four earned on seven hits and two walks while fanning one with leadoff hitter Mary Chvatal (Wahoo) walking twice. That pushes her season-total to 35, one shy of tying the school mark. Finally, senior left fielder Omara Love paced NW by going 2 for 3 from the three-hole.

In the nightcap, Odle allowed just one run in the first inning. She fanned six, walked two and gave up only four hits in blanking the home team for six straight innings. The 'Cats used a walk, stolen base, sac bunt and single to tally the game's only run. Four different Lopers had a hit with NW leadoff hitter Alexis Brown 2 for 2 with a run scored.

UNK heads to Central Missouri (31-15, 12-8) on Saturday afternoon. The Jennies were off today and coming off a Tuesday sweep of Missouri-St. Louis.
