Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

For the Last Time, UNK Beats Newman

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams both beat Newman, 7-0 (men) and 6-1 (women), Friday afternoon in Kearney.

The 34th-ranked Loper men move to 15-6 (3-2) while the women improve to 10-9 (4-4). Prior to first serve, seniors Clary Plachy (Lincoln Pius) and Alex Jaulin (Australia) were honored for their five and three years of service, respectively.

It was a bit of a somber day as this was the last-ever event for Jet tennis; both programs are being eliminated at the end of the academic year, and neither squad will advance to next week's MIAA Tournament.

On the women's side, UNK allowed five combined points in the two doubles matches that were played. While NU won a three setter at two singles, the Lopers won the other five including three by sweep. Junior Julia Wartecka (Poland) rallied from a 5-4 hole in set one to win by two at three and then took set two, 6-2. Finally, Plachy won a three setter at four (3-6, -1, 10-5).

The sixth-ranked pair of Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and Ivan Melnik (Germany) had to battle for a 7-6 (-6) win at one doubles. The match was all tied at three and then at six before UNK tallied the final two points. In singles, Jaulin managed a hard-fought sweep at three (-1, -6) with freshman Yarona Morule (South Africa) rolling at six (-0, -0).

The Loper women host Central Oklahoma tomorrow (10 a.m.) at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center. That dual was originally set for 1 p.m. at Harmon.
