Hornets Down the Lopers at Patriot

Kearney, Neb. – The Emporia State Hornets had four big innings in game one and got five innings of strong relief from freshman Maci Hayes in the night cap to take a double header from Nebraska Kearney, 15-4 and 5-2, Friday evening at Patriot Park.

For a second straight day the field conditions at Dryden Park weren't solid enough so the Lopers (13-26, 2-8) and Hornets (21-12, 7-5) moved over to Patriot.

In game two, Hayes (2-1) blanked the Lopers over the final five innings. Striking out three and walking none, she got out of a second and third, no situation in the third. After sophomore catcher Kendall Kersey (Parker, Colo.) led off the inning with a double, junior Daniella Morillas (Newcastle, Calif.) greeted Hayes with a double to deep left center. However, Hayes got two ground outs and a K to get out of the jam.

Emporia scored two in the first and third innings and then added an insurance run in the seventh. Two- and three-hole hitters Taryn Burkhardt and Brooke Flewelling combined to go 4 for 8 with three runs and RBI with UNK stranding seven on the basepaths. Finally, both Kersey and Morillas had two hits apiece with junior Chloe Odle (Beloit, Kan.) throwing her eighth complete game.

A third baseman, Flewelling (3 for 4, four runs and three RBI's) paced a 14-hit attack in game one. She had homers in the first and fourth innings with E-State scoring 12 runs over its last five at-bats. Also for the Hornets, left fielder Elina Bartlett went 3 for 4 with a run.

UNK, using all six pitchers in its arsenal, saw both left fielder Bailey Peterson (Oakdale, Calif.) and second baseman Alyssa Fortik (Raymond) having two hits with leadoff hitter Zaria Brigham (Victoria, Texas) knocking in two.

The Lopers head to Rogers State (25-11, 9-5) and Northeastern State (20-17, 7-9) next weekend in Oklahoma.
