Kearney, Neb. – The Washburn Ichabods tennis teams swept Nebraska Kearney, 5-2 (men) and 6-1 (women), Tuesday in Topeka.

This dual was set for last weekend but pushed back a few days to weather. With the UNK men (11-6, 2-2) also playing yesterday at Emporia State, the makeup dual with Nebraska Omaha on Wednesday (April 8) has been canceled.

In the early afternoon, junior Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) won in straight sets (-3, -6) at two singles over 53rd-ranked Riko Konno. In set two, Gamboa took the tie breaker by a 7-0 score. That was UNK's only win against the 17th-ranked 'Bods (11-3, 2-1) as they allowed just four combined points in doubles and won three singles matches in straight sets. Finally, freshmen Valentina Zamora (Mexico) and Augustina Abdo (Ecuador) fell in three sets at five and six singles.

The 19th-ranked pair of Andy Brisdon and (U.K.) and Ivan Melnik (Germany) won 6-2 over 11th-ranked Ben Fockjamin and Zio Nahirniak at one singles. UNK was poised to take the doubles point but the 'Bods (12-5, 3-0) rallied at both two and three by identical 7-6 (-3) scores. In both matches, WU rallied from 5-4 deficits.

Senior Alex Jaulin (Australia) had a hard three-set win at three singles (2-6, -1, -6) as did junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) at six (-6, 2-6, -6). However, WU swept the other four matches, winning five of the eight sets by 7-5 or 7-6 scores.

The Blue & Gold head to Arkansas-Ft. Smith on Saturday (April 11) and Northeastern State the following day (April 12).
