#38 UNK Falls in NCAA Tournament to #35 HU

Kearney, Neb. – The 35th-ranked Harding Bison took the doubles point and swept three singles matches to beat 38th-ranked Nebraska Kearney, 4-0, in an NCAA Tournament dual Monday afternoon in Searcy, Ark.

This was one of two NCAA Central Regional sites; the second-seeded Bison (17-6) advance to the "Sweet 16" next week in Surprise, Ariz., while the third-seeded Lopers finish 16-8. In Topeka, 11th-ranked and Central top-seed Washburn faces either Northwest Missouri State or Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday (May 12) for the right to advance to Arizona.

Back on April 30 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals, Harding posted a 4-1 victory over the Lopers. The seventh-ranked pair of Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and Ivan Melnik (Germany) beat third-ranked Adrian Solorzano & Cian Mikkelsen, 6-1, that day but HU got their revenge. They trailed 3-2 before scoring three straight points to win today, 6-4. The Bison won at two again, 6-4, to secure the team point with freshman Cesare Carpano (Italy) and junior Jakub Strzelecki (Poland) up 5-4 at three before that match was called. They won 6-3 in the MIAA tourney dual.

In singles, HU swept three matches like they did in the conference tourney. This time it was at three, one and five. Strzelecki took his second set at six, 6-2, with Brisdon and freshman Ilan Fuentes (France) dropping sets by a 7-6 score.

UNK had only one senior – Alex Jaulin (Australia) – on this year's team. In duals only, Brisdon (13) led in singles wins with Melnik and Fuentes (both 12) right behind. In doubles, Brisdon and Melnik were 18-5 (17-5 at one) and if they stay in the Top 10 of the ITA Rankings, they could be named All-Americans in early June.

Both Loper tennis teams hit the court again this September.
