Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney tennis teams won 29 matches this weekend at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka.

There were multiple draws in both singles and doubles over Friday and Saturday with the competition including Division I Nebraska Omaha, junior colleges and area D2 schools.

Winning their respective doubles draw were junior Julia Wartecka (Poland) and freshman Victoria Garcia (Brazil), senior Fabiana Gamboa (Venezuela) and sophomore Valentina Zamora (Bolivia), sophomore Agustina Abdo (Ecuador) and freshman Stella Stempson (Lincoln). Each went 3-0 with Wartecka and Garcia having a tough battle in round one against Washburn (7-6; 9-7), Gamboa and Zamora beating the 'Bods in their finals match with Abdo and Stempson twice winning by 7-5 scores.

Next, Abdo was runner up in the "purple" singles flight with Garcia (blue), sophomore Hannah Klaiber (red) and freshman Kit Schrock (orange) winning in the consolation finals. Finally, both Wartecka (green) and Gamboa (red) finished fourth.  

The men were also strong in doubles as senior Andy Brisdon (U.K.) and junior Ivan Melnik (Germany) went 3-0 to place first in the "blue" flight. They had quite in the battle in round one (7-6; 10-8) against Pratt C.C. Melnik then won twice in the "blue" singles flight as did freshman Lucas Vaisse (France) in the "yellow" flight. He took the third/fourth place playoff by working overtime (4-6, 7-6; 9-7, 10-7).

The men host Concordia on Oct. 7 at Harmon Park.
